Corporate Wellness — Schools & Students

1 in 3 students.
High anxiety. Every year.
We can change that.

SOMA Republic delivers breathwork programs into secondary schools — practical tools for anxiety, exam stress, and emotional regulation that students actually use, long after the session ends.

The Reality

The transition years are the hardest.
Schools are under-resourced to help.

Adolescence brings rapid neurological change, academic pressure, social complexity, and identity formation — all at once. Most schools have a counsellor, a brochure, and good intentions. That's not enough.

📚

Exam Stress & Academic Pressure

Year 11 and 12 students face high-stakes assessments with little practical training in managing the physiological stress response. Anxiety sabotages preparation and performance — students study hard, then blank out in the exam room.

🤐

Mental Health Stigma

Asking for help still carries stigma in school environments. Only 31% of young women — and far fewer young men — seek support when struggling. The gap between need and help-seeking is a years-long window of untreated distress.

🧠

Anxiety & Focus Challenges

Chronic activation of the stress response rewires how teenagers learn and retain information. A dysregulated nervous system in class is a learning barrier — not a behaviour problem. Schools need tools that address the root cause.

💬

Emotional Regulation Gaps

The prefrontal cortex — responsible for impulse control and emotional regulation — isn't fully developed until age 25. Teenagers aren't being dramatic. They're neurologically under-equipped, and breathwork directly bridges that gap.

The Positioning

Framed for teenagers, not textbooks

This isn't mindfulness class. It's not sitting cross-legged talking about feelings. It's breathwork — a physical skill for managing the nervous system that students can use before an exam, after a conflict, or at 2am when the anxiety spikes.

The Science

Breathwork isn't meditation.
It's nervous system training.

The teenage brain is under construction — highly reactive, easily overwhelmed, and desperately in need of an off switch. Breathwork provides exactly that, in language teenagers understand: it's a skill, not a vibe.

Instant Calm — No Waiting

Box breathing and diaphragmatic techniques activate the parasympathetic nervous system in under 2 minutes. Before an exam, after a conflict, mid-panic — students have a tool that actually works in the moment.

🎯

Focus & Working Memory

A regulated nervous system learns better. Breathwork reduces cortisol, improves working memory, and shifts the brain from reactive (amygdala) to executive (prefrontal cortex) processing. The difference in a classroom is immediate.

😴

Sleep & Recovery

Teenagers are chronically sleep-deprived. Breathing techniques that activate deep parasympathetic tone — 4-7-8 breathing, coherent breathing — directly improve sleep onset and quality. Rested students perform better, full stop.

🧬

Cortisol & Stress Chemistry

Regular practice reduces baseline cortisol — the primary driver of anxiety, irritability, and overwhelm. Over weeks, breathwork doesn't just manage symptoms. It changes the underlying stress response at a physiological level.

🤝

Peer Normalisation

Doing breathwork in a group setting — led by a facilitator who frames it as a performance tool, not a therapy session — normalises the practice. When the whole class does it, the stigma around managing mental health dissolves.

💪

Lifelong Skill

Unlike a counselling appointment, breathwork is self-directed. Once learned, students own the tool forever. They take it into university, relationships, workplaces. The ROI on a single school program compounds across decades.

School Program Structure

What we deliver in your school

Every program is built around your school calendar. We work around exam blocks, sport commitments, and classroom schedules — not around ours.

1

Leadership Meeting

School principal, deputy, and wellbeing coordinator: outcomes, evidence base, program structure, and how it integrates with your existing wellbeing curriculum. We clarify expectations, consent procedures, and session logistics. Nothing proceeds without school leadership on board.

⏱ 30–45 minutes
2

Teacher Professional Development

Before we work with students, we upskill your teachers. A focused PD session covering breathwork fundamentals, classroom integration techniques, and how to reinforce practice between sessions. Teachers become multipliers — the program lives in the classroom after we leave.

⏱ 60–90 minutes
3

Classroom Sessions

Age-appropriate, facilitator-led breathwork sessions delivered in the classroom or hall — no mat, no special equipment. Students learn box breathing, 4-7-8 breathing, and diaphragmatic breathing. Framed as a performance and focus tool. Language is direct, science-based, and free of spiritual framing. Delivered to year groups or smaller cohorts depending on school size.

⏱ 45–60 minutes per cohort
4

Parent Evening

An optional but highly recommended evening session for parents and caregivers — covers what their children have learned, how to reinforce at home, and addresses common misconceptions. Parents who understand the program support it. Those who don't can quietly undermine it.

⏱ 45–60 minutes
5

Ongoing Support

Post-program resources for teachers and students. Optional return sessions timed to exam blocks (Term 3 ATAR support, for example). Digital practice guides. Facilitator check-ins with wellbeing team. This isn't a one-off excursion — it's a sustained skill-building program.

The Evidence

This is evidence-based.
Not wellness trend.

Breathwork interventions in school settings have been trialled globally. The results are consistent — anxiety decreases, focus improves, and students report feeling more capable of managing stress independently.

"School-based mindfulness and breathwork interventions significantly reduced anxiety and improved wellbeing scores in secondary students across 12 controlled studies."

Journal of School Psychology / Meta-analysis

"Slow-paced breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and has demonstrated consistent effects on anxiety reduction in adolescent populations."

Frontiers in Psychology / Adolescent Health

"Students who received structured breathing instruction before high-stakes assessments reported lower test anxiety and performed measurably better on standardised tasks."

British Journal of Educational Psychology
